Interhotel Zlín formerly Social House
One of the most important buildings in Bata's Zlín in the 1930s was the Social House hotel which was built in a functionalist style. It offered a huge capacity of 700 beds, with rooms in modern American style and rooms for social use. It operates as a hotel to this day.
The Interhotel Zlín, formerly the Hotel Moskva or the Social House, was built by Tomas Bata for business travellers, customers, suppliers and tourists coming to Zlín. Not only to do business, but also catch a glimpse of the legendary manufacturer who transformed not only his factory but also the city as a whole. The representative hotel stands in the direct axis of the factory entrance and closes the Labour Square (náměstí Práce) which served as the commercial and social base of the city.
The Social House was originally designed by Miroslav Lorenc who later left the company due to disagreements on the financing of the neighbouring Big Cinema. Rough construction was then completed by Vladimír Karfík.
“The modular units on the ground and first floors were completely filled with continuous glazing in iron frames, which together with the massive marquee, marked the entrance and social facilities. The social facilities, which included large-scale economy canteens as well as grand French restaurants, halls with table tennis and billiard tables, a hairdresser, a café with a dance floor, a cafeteria and lecture and theatre hall, were supposed to create an environment that can only be found in international businesses. In addition to the hotel management offices and staff bedrooms, there were 300 comfortably-furnished hotel rooms of various sizes for approximately 700 guests.” You can find out about its construction in the Zlín Architecture Manual.
During the Protectorate the Social House was called Hotel Victoria, after 1948 it was renamed Hotel Moskva. The post-war decades had a major impact on its appearance. The elegant functionalist interiors were destroyed. The open terrace on the top floor was covered and adapted to house maisonette flats in the 1990s. A few years ago, Interhotel Zlín underwent an extensive reconstruction and modernisation.
In 2022, the hotel was renamed in response to the Russian occupation of Ukraine. Today, it is called Interhotel Zlín. You can stay in the First Class rooms: single-bed rooms, twin-bed rooms with separate beds, double-bed rooms with wide beds and business suites. You'll have a splendid view of the Zlín forests or the red brick city of Tomas Bata.
This hotel is known to every citizen of Zlín. People come here for balls and other cultural events. The Zlín Film Festival and various conferences have been held here for years. You can come here for a cup of coffee, lunch and dinner, but also to play a game of bowling or visit a casino.
