Big Cinema
The largest cinema hall in the former Czechoslovakia and Central Europe was built by the Bata Company in 1930. It was the first of a number of cultural buildings at the Labour Square (náměstí Práce). The cinema, loved by the Zlín citizens, was closed in 2016 and is awaiting reconstruction.
The Big Cinema is a place where thousands of films, but also exceptional moments, have taken place. It has served as a venue for cultural events and concerts, it was one of the main stages of the Zlín Film Festival, and a place to go for culture and dates for more than 80 years.
The construction of the Big Cinema was supposed to be only a temporary solution. The cinema was to be moved to the southern part of the Labour Square in order to close the line of buildings and the open space. However, the square was never modified, and the Big Cinema still stands where František Lýdie Gahura designed it in 1932.
At first glance, it is obvious that its volume and shape are completely different from most of the buildings in Zlín. The architect used an easily dismantled structure that was ready to be moved. During the war, the cinema was damaged by aerial bombs, then repaired and reopened. However, due to the damaged statics, it is now closed and awaits reconstruction.
